FOOD ALERTS

Recently the IAMS company had a recall on their pet food including the Veterinary Prescription Diets.  We just wanted to remind everyone that thousands of pounds of pet foods have been recalled in recent years because of fears that they could be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration has announced more than a dozen recalls of pet foods and treats since 2006 because of salmonella contamination.  Salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramping.  According to the FDA Salmonella is most dangerous for babies, small children and anyone with a weak immune system.

To help reduce the spread of Salmonella people should wash their hands thoroughly after handling pet food or treats.  Pet owners should avoid feeding  animals in the kitchen, or near food storage or preparation areas.  They should also avoid washing pet bowls in kitchen sinks or bathtubs where bacteria could spread to food or people.

While most dogs would be happy eating just about anything,

there are several food items they should not ingest.

Here are some items to watch out for:

CHOCOLATE:  Can cause anxiety, tremors, vomiting, diarrhea and heart problems.

GARBAGE:  Old food can contain molds that can cause vomiting, diarrhea and severe abdominal pain.

RHUBARB:  Can cause kidney failure.

ONIONS & GARLIC: Can cause anemia. The pet may become lethargic and weak.

GRAPES & RAISINS: Can cause kidney damage.
